1.1       root        1: This directory holds the latest distribution version of GNU Emacs.
                      2:  The subdirectory `src' holds the C code,
                      3:  `lisp' holds the Lisp code for the editing commands,
                      4:  `etc' holds various associated documentation files
                      5:     and programs that Emacs runs,
                      6:    See etc/DEBUG for info on how to debug.
                      7:  `info' holds the Info documentation tree.
                      8:  `man' holds the source of the Emacs manual.
                      9:  `shortnames' holds programs and data files for creating files of #define's
                     10:    used to convert long symbol names to distinct short ones
                     11:    for C compiles that cannot distinguish more than 8 characters.

                     13: The file INSTALL in this directory says how to bring up
                     14:  GNU Emacs, once you have loaded the entire subtree of this
                     15:  directory.  It also contains information on many common
                     16:  problems that occur in building, installing and running Emacs.

                     18: The `etc' subdirectory contains several other files,
                     19:  named in capital letters, which you should look at
                     20:  when installing GNU Emacs.
