The first ! 23: pre-release (version 4.0) occurred a month ago; the program included ! 24: support only for Berkeley Unix. This new release (4.2) includes support ! 25: for: ! 26: ! 27: . 4.x Berkeley Unix (VAX, SUN) ! 28: . Generic AT&T System III, System V ! 29: . Microsoft Xenix for the PC/AT ! 30: . Interactive on the PC/XT (PC/IX) and other systems ! 31: . DEC Professional 3xx with Venix 1.0 ! 32: . NCR Tower ! 33: ! 34: All reported bugs have been fixed (or at least fixes have been ! 35: attempted), and many of the restrictions lifted. "Dial" and "script" ! 36: commands have been added, along with code to support modem control and ! 37: dialers, uucp line locking, and the like. The program itself has been ! 38: somewhat reorganized to be more adaptable to small environments: the ! 39: larger modules have been split; long character strings have been ! 40: shortened. ! 41: ! 42: Most of the new work was done by Herm Fischer of Litton Data Systems, Van ! 43: Nuys CA (HFISCHER@USC-ISIB), and there were also contributions from many ! 44: others in the form of bug reports and/or fixes. NCR Tower support came ! 45: from John Bray at Auburn University. The new makefile (distributed as ! 46: CKERMI.MAK) embodies procedures for building all the different versions. ! 47: ! 48: Since the program now runs on a variety computers, large and small, it ! 49: would seem relatively safe to begin adding support for other systems ! 50: without fear that the program will have to be completely reorganized ! 51: (again). The only systems supported by C-Kermit so far are Unix systems; ! 52: rather than create a separate ckx and ckz module for each such system ! 53: (since these systems tend to differ in small places, but still have much ! 54: in common), conditional compilation was used within these modules. If ! 55: C-Kermit is to be adapted to non-Unix systems, then a full replacement of ! 56: the ckx and/or ckz modules is probably indicated. This is what we will ! 57: probably do in bringing the program up on the Macintosh. ! 58: ! 59: The files are available via anonymous FTP from Internet host CU20B ! 60: (Internet number 192.5.43.128) as KER:CK*.*. They will appear at ! 61: okstate (for uucp'ing) and on KERMSRV (BITnet) shortly. If you plan to ! 62: adapt this program to a new system, be sure to let me know quickly so I ! 63: can prevent duplication of effort and can put people with similar ! 64: interests in touch with each other. ! 65: ! 66: ------------------------------ ! 67: ! 68: End of Info-Kermit Digest ! 69: ************************* ! 70: -------
