1.1 ! root 1: I am sending the following note to you because you all had expressed ! 2: interest at one time or another in either running, beta testing, or ! 3: somethin-elsing the remote netnews software which I have been working ! 4: on here at Berkeley. This is basically a status report of where I ! 5: am in the project, and what remains to be done. If you'd like to help ! 6: work on the project, or make suggestions or flames, those are welcome. ! 7: My apologies for not doing this sooner. ! 8: ! 9: The status of the server is as follows: I have modified ! 10: "rn" to run with it, and it works quite well. It's very fast (although ! 11: long net.sources articles tend to drag over the net), and it is a full ! 12: implementation of "rn", except for the fact that you cannot post news. ! 13: I intend to correct this by hacking at inews, so it knows how to forward ! 14: to the server machine over the net when a newsgroup isn't local. ! 15: ! 16: The problem here, is, as usual, time. For one thing, the daemon runs ! 17: under inetd, which is a recent Berkeley development, and I'm not sure it ! 18: exists elsewhere. So, the daemon needs to be rewritten to stand on its ! 19: own. Second, the daemon currently forks off one copy of itself per ! 20: request; this could quickly drive a machine into the groud. It ! 21: needs to be modified such that one server can handle about 10 users, and ! 22: then fork off a copy. Finally, inews needs to be patched as I've mentioned ! 23: above. ! 24: ! 25: Of course, none of this is necessarilly conforming to the info-lan ! 26: discussion group which Chuq has been running. So I have no idea how ! 27: compatible this will be when all is said and done. ! 28: ! 29: On top of all this, school starts tomorrow and it will be a hectic ! 30: semester. Since the only time I have for this is my own, and that's ! 31: precious little, I don't know when I will get around to doing the stuff ! 32: that needs be done. ! 33: ! 34: So, the end result is that you're welcome to a copy of the modified ! 35: "rn" software (it's about a meg, and it's all #ifdef'd, so you simply ! 36: define SERVER and compile it). If you wish to do this, let me know. ! 37: And offers to help will be greatly appreciated. ! 38: ! 39: Phil Lapsley ! 40: ([email protected]) ! 41: (...!ucbvax!phil)
