\begin{abstract}
This note summarizes the activities of the first six months of the NYSERNet
White Pages Pilot Project.
This pilot is interesting in three respects:
it is a large, distributed information service involving administration by
multiple organizations;
it is the first production-quality field test of the OSI Directory (X.500);
and,
it is the first large scale production application of OSI technology on top of
the popular Internet (TCP/IP) suite of protocols.
