                     76: The software supporting the pilot project is the QUIPU implementation
                     77: of the OSI Directory,
                     78: which is a part of the ISO Development Environment (ISODE).

                     80: QUIPU was originally developed as a part of the INCA project
                     81: (under the auspices of the ESPRIT initiative of the EEC).
                     82: The Inca of Peru did not have writing.
                     83: Instead,
                     84: they stored information on strings,
                     85: carefully knotted in a specific manner with colored thread,
                     86: and attached to a larger rope.
                     87: Such a device was known as a {\em Quipu\/}
                     88: (pronounced {\em kwip-ooo}).
                     89: The encoding was obscure,
                     90: and could only be read by selected trained people:
                     91: the {\em Quipucamayocs}.
                     92: The Quipu was a key component of Inca society,
                     93: as it contained information about property and locations throughout
                     94: the extensive Inca empire.
