                     28: edits the password file while setting the appropriate locks,
                     29: and does any necessary processing after the password file is unlocked.
                     30: If the password file is already being edited, then you will be told
                     31: to try again later.

                     35: an alternate editor.

                     38: performs a number of consistency checks on the password entries,
                     39: and will not allow a password file with a ``mangled'' entry to be
