                     12: The file /etc/phones contains the system-wide
                     13: private phone numbers for the
                     14: .IR tip (1C)
                     15: program.  This file is normally unreadable, and so may contain
                     16: privileged information.  The format of the file is a series of lines
                     17: of the form: <system-name>[\ \et]*<phone-number>.  The system name is
                     18: one of those defined in the
                     19: .IR remote (5)
                     20: file and the phone number is constructed from any sequence of
                     21: characters terminated only by ``,'' or the end of the line.
                     22: The ``='' and ``*'' characters are
                     23: indicators to the auto call units to pause and wait for a second dial
                     24: tone (when going through an exchange).  The ``='' is required by the
                     25: DF02-AC and the ``*'' is required by the BIZCOMP 1030.

                     27: Only one phone number per line is permitted.  However, if more than
                     28: one line in the file contains the same system name

                     30: will attempt to dial each one in turn, until it establishes a connection.
