5: (a1) First, the straightforward cases: useful words not previously
6: accepted by "spell". Most were obtained by reading issues of Natural
7: History Magazine (and also one book on India) at the terminal, and
8: typing in words that I guessed might be missing but that seemed common
9: enough to be worth including. Others came up in different ways, such
10: as thinking about the algorithms "spell" must use to get derived forms,
11: guessing at loopholes, and testing them out. Whenever I had a list of
12: twenty or thirty words, I would run "spell" on it, and add the results
13: to my collection.

211: /usr/dict/words as a precaution. For example, "microbe" is accepted as
212: the combination of the prefix "micro-" and the entry "be", but it might
213: be decided at some time in the future to revise spell so that 2-letter
214: words are not combined with prefixes. Similarly, if the bug that
215: presently causes "happyly", "dayly" etc. to be accepted by spell were
216: fixed, "shyly" and "coyly" would also be rejected.

274: The program "spell" will accept a word if it can be derived from a
275: word in its "dictionary" using certain prefixes and suffixes; e.g. it
276: accepts "happiness" because "happy" is in the dictionary, "doing"
277: because "do" is there, "preoccupied" because "occupied" is there. This
278: also leads it to accept enormous numbers of non-words, such as
279: "magnetohandkerchiefism", "waterly",
280: "overundermetasillierererererity". Most of these are harmless, but
281: some are possible misspellings of correct words, and so are put into a
282: list called the "stoplist"; words on that list and words which can be
283: derived from them by the same prefixes or suffixes are rejected by
284: spell even if they would otherwise be accepted.

287: the list consists of forms that could be typos for commonly occurring
288: sequences of words, starting with "forevery", a possible typo for "for

290: I have not included cases that result from essential errors in the
291: "spell" algorithm for dealing with suffixes, e.g. the fact that it will
292: accept the addition of -ly to words such as "happy", "sticky", etc.

321: Incidentally, a dictionary check surprised me as to how many of
322: the forms in -er that I originally had scheduled to add to the
323: stoplist as misspellings of forms in -or are in fact acceptable. E.g.,
324: Websters 2nd Int'l prefers "conveyer" to "conveyor"; a "confesser" is
325: one who confesses, as distinct from the "confessor" to whom he or she
326: gives confession; though "mayer" is a possible misspelling of "mayor",
327: it cannot be put on the stoplist because a "Mayer" is one who goes
328: Maying.
329: (And our chairman John Addison Jr., looking over my list, has
330: suggested tongue in cheek that if you are not nice to the exterminator
331: people, they might "enroach" your house.)

333: (c2) Next, forms that are to be *deleted* from the stoplist, because

350: correct words to be accepted. (E.g., until now "spell" has rejected
351: "dishes" because it can be analyzed as "dis- + hes", where "dis-" is one
