.SH NAME
registerhost \- create clearinghouse entry for this UNIX host
.SH SYNOPSIS
.B registerhost
[
.B -f
]
.SH DESCRIPTION
.I Registerhost
should be run as part of the installation of XNS support on a UNIX system.
It queries the kernel and user for necessary information, then updates the
Clearinghouse on the local network to contain an entry for this UNIX system.
The Clearinghouse entry will be used by XNS clients (e.g. XDE Chat, the
Cornell Bridge, etc.) to find the address of the UNIX host.
.PP
If the \fB-\fR option is used, the entry will also be added as a network
file service.
.PP
Before running
.I registerhost
you must use
.I ifconfig
to enable an Ethernet interface for XNS use.
.PP
.I Registerhost
first prompts for an XNS user name and password;
you must have domain administrator status on the clearinghouse in order to
update an entry.
It next attempts to determine your XNS address. This address consists of
a net number assigned by Xerox and a processor number which matches the
Ethernet address of the interface on your machine. Note that if you have
a UNIX host operating as a gateway with several Ethernet interfaces
configured
for XNS, all such interfaces must have the same Ethernet address, but must
be on different networks, and all must be specified to
.IR registerhost .
.SH FILES
/usr/local/lib/xnscourier/CH.addrs	address of local Clearinghouse
.SH "SEE ALSO"
ifconfig(8)
.SH DIAGNOSTICS
.SH BUGS
Probably lots of them. In particular,
.I registerhost
should determine Ethernet addresses by using ioctl(2) rather than asking
the user.
