                      2: Back early in this sequence we made clear that
                      3: the shell (the normal command interpreter) and the
                      4: editor were distinct and they didn't pay any attention
                      5: to each other's commands.
                      6: Sometimes you are in the editor and you really want
                      7: to execute a shell command.  You can do that
                      8: by prefixing it with !.  For example,
                      9:   !ls
                     10: will list your directory.
                     11: Remember that "date" is the shell command
                     12: to find out what time it is.
                     13: Try editing the file 'bridge'; print it out,
                     14: then, without leaving the editor, ask for the
                     15: time and then leave the editor and say "ready".
