Switches are used to show and set state, not to initiate actions.  Switches are often, but not always, indicated by a check box icon.  Contrary to the radio button icon, a check box icon indicates a completely independent choice; there can be no mutual dependencies within a group of check boxes.  A single check box can be used alone or you can create a group of independent check boxes.  Switches have two states.  If you want to adapt a switch to display more than two states, you should use icons that are unlike the ones used when there are just two states.
