                      6: The file /etc/phones contains the system-wide
                      7: private phone numbers for the
                      8: .IR tip (1C)
                      9: program.  This file is normally unreadable, and so may contain
                     10: privileged information.  The format of the file is a series of lines
                     11: of the form: <system-name>[\ \et]*<phone-number>.  The system name is
                     12: one of those defined in the
                     13: .IR remote (5)
                     14: file and the phone number is
                     15: constructed from [0123456789-=*%].  The ``='' and ``*'' characters are
                     16: indicators to the auto call units to pause and wait for a second dial
                     17: tone (when going through an exchange).  The ``='' is required by the
                     18: DF02-AC and the ``*'' is required by the BIZCOMP 1030.

                     20: Only one phone number per line is permitted.  However, if more than
                     21: one line in the file contains the same system name

                     23: will attempt to dial each one in turn, until it establishes a connection.
