                      8: A manifest constant is a numeric constant that is given a name so
                      9: it can be  defined differently under different computing environ-
                     10: ments.   An example  is EOF,  the  end-of-file marker,  which has
                     11: wildly different  representations under different  operating sys-
                     12: tems.  Note, too, that numerals are manifest constants by defini-
                     13: tion.

                     15: The use  of manifest constants  in programs helps  to ensure that
                     16: code is portable by isolating the definition of these elements in
                     17: a single header file, where they need to be changed only once.
