                      8: NULL  is defined  in the  header file stddef.h.   It is  the null
                      9: pointer  (cchhaarr  *)00,  which is  a  pointer  initialized to  zero.
                     10: Numerous routines  return this value  to indicate failure;  it is
                     11: useful  as  a return  value  because it  points  nowhere, and  so
                     12: removes the  possibility of accidentally destroying  a section of
                     13: memory after failure.
