                     12: Most COHERENT commands manipulate files stored on a disk.  To im-
                     13: prove  system performance,  the COHERENT  system often  changes a
                     14: copy  of part  of the  disk in  a buffer  in memory,  rather than
                     15: repeatedly performing the time-consuming disk access required.

                     17: sync writes information from  the memory buffers to the disk, up-
                     18: dating the  disk images  of all  mounted file systems  which have
                     19: been changed.   In addition, it  writes the date and  time on the
                     20: root file system.

                     22: sync should be executed  before system shutdown to ensure the in-
                     23: tegrity of the file system.
