whereis Command whereis
Locate source, binary, and manual files
wwhheerreeiiss [-bbmmrrssuu] [-BBMMSS _d_i_r ... -ff] _n_a_m_e ...
The command wwhheerreeiiss locates source files, binary files
(executables), and manual pages (documentation) that match a
given _n_a_m_e. Prior to searching, wwhheerreeiiss strips _n_a_m_e of any path
information, extensions, and the ss. prefix.
By default, wwhheerreeiiss searches the following directories:
SSoouurrcceess BBiinnaarriieess MMaannuuaall PPaaggeess
/usr/src/cmd /bin /usr/man/ALL
/usr/src/games /usr/bin /usr/man/COHERENT
/usr/src/local /usr/games /usr/man/KERNEL
/usr/src/alien /usr/local /usr/man/MULTI
/usr/include /etc
/usr/include/sys /lib
/usr/lib
***** Options *****
wwhheerreeiiss recognizes the following command-line options:
-bb Search only for binary files.
-BB Use the directory list specified by _d_i_r instead of the
default directory list for binary files.
-ff Terminate the directory list introduced by options -BB, -MM, or
-SS, and treat any additional command-line arguments as file
names to be searched for.
-mm Search only for manual pages (documentation files).
-MM Use the directory list specified by _d_i_r instead of the
default directory list for manual pages.
-rr Search recursively downward from the directories specified by
_d_i_r or from the default directories. This option is useful
when the searched directories contain sub-directories. By
default, wwhheerreeiiss searches only the directories specified or
the default directories.
-ss Search only for source files.
-SS Use the directory list specified by _d_i_r instead of the
default directory list for source files.
-uu Search for ``unusual'' files. A file is said to be unusual
if it does not have one entry for each of the three search
categories.
