1.1     ! root        1: The current release of GCC 2 does not support debugging on the RS/6000.
        !             2: Debugging support is being written, and will probably be in a future
        !             3: release.

        !             5: The current version of the assembler (/bin/as) for the RS/6000 has
        !             6: certain problems that prevent debugging with GCC from working at all.
        !             7: 
        !             8: IBM has produced a fixed version of the assembler.  The replacement
        !             9: assembler is not a standard component of either AIX 3.1.5 or AIX 3.2,
        !            10: but is expected to become standard in a future distribution.
        !            11: 
        !            12: If you have an RS/6000, you can get the fixed assembler either on
        !            13: diskette or via VNET ftp.  VNET distribution may be desirable if you
        !            14: have an IBM rep nearby with a networked VM machine.

        !            16: In either case, have your customer number ready and execute
        !            17:     lslpp -h bos.obj
        !            18: to determine your release level.  (Look on the ACTIVE line for
        !            19: something like 03.01.0005.0012.)  Then call IBM Support at
        !            20: 800-237-5511.  Ask for emergency shipment of the RS/6000 AIX fix for
        !            21: APAR IX22829.  They may ask you to verify that it's a fix for ".extern
        !            22: foo conflicts with defining foo"; say yes.  You will receive a tar or
        !            23: tar.Z file containing an assembler plus installation instructions.

        !            25: You might as well start this process now rather than waiting until
        !            26: you actually wish you had the fixed assembler.
