1.1       root        1: The current release of GCC 2 does not support debugging on the RS/6000.
                      2: Debugging support is being written, and will probably be in a future
                      3: release.

                      5: The current version of the assembler (/bin/as) for the RS/6000 has
                      6: certain problems that prevent debugging with GCC from working at all.
                      7: 
                      8: IBM has produced a fixed version of the assembler.  The replacement
                      9: assembler is not a standard component of either AIX 3.1.5 or AIX 3.2,
                     10: but is expected to become standard in a future distribution.
                     11: 
                     12: If you have an RS/6000, you can get the fixed assembler either on
                     13: diskette or via VNET ftp.  VNET distribution may be desirable if you
                     14: have an IBM rep nearby with a networked VM machine.
                     15: 
                     16: In either case, have your customer number ready and execute
                     17:     lslpp -h bos.obj
                     18: to determine your release level.  (Look on the ACTIVE line for
                     19: something like 03.01.0005.0012.)  Then call IBM Support at
                     20: 800-237-5511.  Ask for emergency shipment of the RS/6000 AIX fix for
                     21: APAR IX22829.  They may ask you to verify that it's a fix for ".extern
                     22: foo conflicts with defining foo"; say yes.  You will receive a tar or
                     23: tar.Z file containing an assembler plus installation instructions.

                     25: You might as well start this process now rather than waiting until
                     26: you actually wish you had the fixed assembler.
