.TH ALEF 1 .SH NAME 8al, kal, val \- ALEF compilers .SH SYNOPSIS .B 8al [ .I option ... ] [ .I file ... ] .br .B kal [ .I option ... ] [ .I file ... ] .br .B val [ .I option ... ] [ .I file ... ] .SH DESCRIPTION ALEF is a concurrent programming language with a syntax like C's. .IR Kal , .I val and .I 8al compile the named ALEF source .I files into SPARC, MIPS and Intel 386 object files. Source .I files have the extension .BR .l . The ALEF source is passed through .IR cpp (1) prior to compilation. Object files have the normal extension for each architecture: .B .k for SPARC, .B .v for MIPS and .B .8 for 386. Up to .B $NPROC .I files will be compiled in parallel. .PP The compiler options are: .TP .7i .BI -o " obj" Place output in file .I obj (ignored if there is more than one input file). Default is to take the last element of the input pathname, strip any trailing .BR .l , and append the object file suffix. .TP .B -a Write no object file, but produce an .IR acid (1) program on standard output, comprising a set of type declarations and functions to print those types. .TP .B -aa Like .B -a but suppress output for types and functions declared in header files. .TP .B -w Print warning messages for non fatal errors. .TP .B -N Do not run the code optimizer. .TP .B -c Do not compile code for .B check statements. .TP .B -S Produce assembly language instead of object code as output. By default, output goes to a file named by the last element of the input pathname with .B .l replaced by .BR .s . .TP .BI -D\*S name=def .br .ns .TP .BI -D \*Sname Define the .I name to the preprocessor, as if by .LR #define . If no definition is given, the name is defined as .LR 1 . .TP .BI -I \*Sdir .L #include files whose names do not begin with .L / are always sought first in the directory of the .I file argument, then in directories named in .B -I options, then in .BR /sys/include/alef , and finally in .BR /$objtype/include/alef. .TP .BI -d c Produce various forms of debugging. The character .I c is an alphabetic. .PP The compiler recognizes several .B #pragma directives. The first, .BR "#pragma lib" , is the same as in .IR 2c (1). The others have effect only when profiling is turned on by the .B -p option of the loader (see .IR 2l (1)). The directive .B "#pragma noprofile" disables the generation of profiling code for subsequently declared functions; .B "#pragma profile" enables it again. The main use of these directives is to avoid the profiling confusion caused by functions that do not explicitly return, such as the task-switching functions in the run-time system.
