README.TXT File
README file for Microsoft(R) Windows NT(TM) SDK (Preliminary Release)
UNICODE Font & Keyboard Support
(C) Copyright Microsoft Corporation, 1992
For this preliminary release we have provided a UNICODE font and Russian
keyboard layout to give developers a head start on developing UNICODE enabled
applications. This README contains directions on installing the font and the
keyboard. It assumes that the NT machine is connected to a CD-ROM. If this
is not the case, then copy the appropriate files to a location on your hard
drive first, and then follow these instructions.
1. UNICODE FONT.
In order to use the UNICODE notepad (UNIPAD.EXE), or any of the UNICODE
sample applications, such as SHOWUNI, or NTFONTS, you must first install
the UNICODE font.
To do this, complete the following steps.
a) Ensure that the font file UCLUCIDA.TTF is in
<cd drive>:\mstools\unicode\fonts (or wherever you have copied this file)
b) From the Control Panel choose Fonts
c) Choose Add
d) Indicate the path to the UCLUCIDA.TTF file.
e) Highlight the Lucida Sans Unicode (TrueType) selection.
f) Choose OK.
The font should now be installed on your system. As a quick test, start
UNIPAD.EXE and open the file UNICODE.UTF. You should see examples of all
of the characters built into this font.
NOTE: On S3 video cards, in 1024x768 mode, you should turn Word Wrap on in
UNIPAD in order to see the math characters more effectively.
2. RUSSIAN KEYBOARD.
In order to use the Russian Keyboard with UNIPAD.EXE, you must first
install the keyboard as follows. In the instructions <system> represents
i386 for x86 architectures and MIPS for R4000 architectures.
a) Copy OEMLAY0.inf from <cd drive>:\mstools\unicode\layouts to the
\nt\system directory on your computer.
b) From the Control Panel, choose International.
c) Select Keyboard Layout
d) Highlight Russian
e) Choose OK
f) When prompted for the path, enter
<cd drive>:\mstools\unicode\layouts\<system>
g) Choose Continue.
You should now be able to go into UNIPAD.EXE and type in Russian. You can
then return to the International Applet and choose the US English keyboard
again, switch back to UNIPAD, and type in English in the same document.
Please remember to switch back to the US keyboard before typing in any
other apps, or before trying to save the file that you were working on.
