                     25: Doug McIlroy and I are preparing a new edition of the manual
                     26: for Research

                     28: Since it is ten years since the last time a volume 2 was printed,
                     29: we thought it appropriate to print one at this time.
                     30: As you would expect, there was a high turnover of papers.
                     31: A good many have been superceded by the growing
                     32: .UX
                     33: literature or by more useful manual entries.
                     34: Many documents have been added to describe some of the many new
                     35: (since the 7th Edition) programs in our
                     36: .UX .

                     38: We have made an effort to ensure the papers have a common look and feel.
                     39: This includes a common font (Times Roman), point size, two column format, treatment
                     40: of programs and other literal text, macro package (\f(CW-mpm\fP),
                     41: page balancing and
                     42: use of
                     43: .I prefer
                     44: for all references.

                     46: What to look for
                     47: .PP
                     48: Treat this as a final draft (a few exceptions are noted below).
                     49: I seek comments and corrections on all aspects of specific papers.
                     50: Comments on paper selection (why is that in? why isn't that included?)
                     51: will be accepted but would have to be mighty persuasive to change the
                     52: current membership.

                     56: this paper will be either substantially revised or omitted.
