                      9: This selection of supporting papers to accompany the
                     10: Programmer's Manual
                     11: reflects both continuity and
                     12: change in the
                     13: UNIX research system since the last such collection appeared
                     14: in the seventh edition a decade ago.
                     15: Three-fourths of the papers are completely new, and
                     16: many of the rest have been substantially
                     17: rewritten.
                     18: Most of the papers represent the work
                     19: of members of the center where the system
                     20: was born, Computing Science Research at AT&T Bell Laboratories.
                     21: Previous work of this center has become so widely known that
                     22: many of the more basic papers from the seventh edition
                     23: could safely be dropped to make way for more recent material.

                     25: Some papers continue important themes that date from
                     26: the early days of the system: software tools, program
                     27: development, text processing, document preparation.
                     28: Some address the down-to-earth subject of the
                     29: care, feeding, and protection of a multifaceted system
                     30: in an imperfect world.
                     31: Others address the increasingly pervasive 
                     32: theme of communications and distributed
                     33: computing: `stream' connections among
                     34: processes and files on one or more computers,
                     35: cross-machine file systems,
                     36: multiplexed (windowed) terminals,
                     37: worldwide electronic mail.
                     38: A few papers suggest the breadth
                     39: of research applications that meet and reinforce each other
                     40: in this system: music, graphics, protocol verification, 
                     41: image processing.

                     47: in any other published work.
