1.1     ! root        1: Expletives are words that have no  content.   For  instance,
        !             2: "it"  and  "there" are often used as expletives        in sentences
        !             3: such as        "It is dark" and "There are three solutions to  this
        !             4: puzzle."  In  these  sentences,         "it"  and  "there"  have no
        !             5: content; they are simply linguistic placeholders.

        !             7:      Expletives         are  sometimes  necessary,  e.g.,  "It   is
        !             8: raining."  Often,  however,  they add unnecessary words        to a
