1.1       root        1: Expletives are words that have no  content.   For  instance,
                      2: "it"  and  "there" are often used as expletives        in sentences
                      3: such as        "It is dark" and "There are three solutions to  this
                      4: puzzle."  In  these  sentences,         "it"  and  "there"  have no
                      5: content; they are simply linguistic placeholders.

                      7:      Expletives         are  sometimes  necessary,  e.g.,  "It   is
                      8: raining."  Often,  however,  they add unnecessary words        to a
                      9: sentence: "There are three solutions  to  this puzzle"  can
                     10: easily be shortened to "This puzzle has        three solutions."
